Light Generation, Amplification, and Wavelength Conversion via Stimulated Raman Scattering in Silicon Microstructures
This chapter is organized in two parts. In part one, we present the theory of Spontaneous and Stimulated Raman Scattering (SRS), as well as that of Coherent Anti Stokes Raman Scattering (CARS) in silicon. The treatment of these phenomena in silicon is more complex than that in silica fiber, due to crystal symmetry considerations. We show that, because of the intrinsically large Raman coefficien...
متن کاملAvalanche Amplification in Silicon Drift Detectors
A novel device which combines advantages of Silicon Drift Detector and Silicon Avalanche Diode on the same silicon wafer is proposed. Avalanche ampliication is applied to cloud of drifting electrons in order to improve detection of radiation with low energy deposition coeecient. Principle and optimal conditions for the operation of this new detector based on Avalanche Ampliier are discussed.
متن کاملQuasielastic light scattering in silicon
A dominant, broad central mode in the Brillouin spectrum of silicon was first reported by Sandercock in 1978. This feature was later ascribed to a two-phonon difference scattering process. However, the issue of quasielastic scattering in silicon has remained a major outstanding problem in Brillouin scattering, because similar central modes in other materials have commonly displayed two componen...
متن کاملLight Trapping with Silicon Light Funnel Arrays
Silicon light funnels are three-dimensional subwavelength structures in the shape of inverted cones with respect to the incoming illumination. Light funnel (LF) arrays can serve as efficient absorbing layers on account of their light trapping capabilities, which are associated with the presence of high-density complex Mie modes. Specifically, light funnel arrays exhibit broadband absorption enh...
متن کاملEfficient silicon based light emitters
Recent progress on electrically driven silicon based light emitters is reviewed, with emphasis on our work on light emitting pn diodes (LED) and MOS devices doped with rare-earth elements. The LEDs were fabricated by high-dose boron implantation, producing nanoscale modifications in the material. The electroluminescence (EL) efficiency increases with temperature, reaching 0.1% (wall plug effici...
